Twenty Twelve. Just another
reminder on telly of those meetings or networking experiences in which
you've found yourself cornered by 'bullsh*t bingo'. I love the programme.
I've said for the last decade that just because youwork in Marketing & PR,
it doesn't mean you have to say the words 'generic', 'touch base', 'cross
pollination', 'narrative' etc. as you go about your business.
Of
course, I'm being unfair because that 'chat' is now ubiquitous, irrespective of
the sector and each has its own language/version of bullsh*t bingo. I know
many people who don't even know that they're doing it! There are several
reasons not to indulge in bingo when you're out networking and they
include people wanting a break from the stresses of the day's bingo
and, they're looking for genuine conversation.
If
you want to go down that 'keep in the loop', 'press the flesh', 'move
the goalposts' rhetoric, you might be better off at a less relaxed
networking gig at which you have to without fail, give referrals every
week.
Relaxed,
informal, no-pressure, cost-effective, tangible networking. it's a no brainer.
